“I Think You Should Leave” lines are almost like a language to me at this point. Quotes from the show have become part of my everyday vocabulary. Robinson is one of those people, and to me, that’s a gift. Although that may seem mean, there are very few people whose sheer existence is amusing. Whenever he pops up in a sketch, I laugh just because of the way he looks. Robinson has one of those faces that is just funny. Robinson has perfected this loud and energetic brand of comedy. It’s nice to just laugh at someone doing a funny thing. Sometimes, it’s nice to not have to think so hard. The show is loud and right in your face at all times. Humor that lies a bit below the surface, or maybe humor that is a comment on some kind of societal problem. I’m definitely someone who appreciates subtle humor. Or, from season three, a man innocuously offers to be a designated driver for his co-workers only to later reveal that he is “The Driving Crooner.” It’s dumb, sure. In one sketch from season two, what starts as an insider trading trial in a courtroom divulges into a saga about a man’s hat with safari flaps on the back. A normal setting, normal characters - a normal situation. Almost every sketch will start out completely normal. It’s honestly hard to describe the show to someone who hasn’t seen it before. Whether it’s a doctor that really wants to get into the hottest club in town, a man on a dating show who just wants to ride a zipline or a professor who really wants his student’s hamburger, “I Think You Should Leave” perfectly teeters on the line of stupid and funny. The sketches are absurdist in the best way possible. No show has made me laugh quite as much as “I Think You Should Leave.” It’s a sketch comedy series on Netflix created by and starring Tim Robinson, who was a writer and performer on “Saturday Night Live.” “I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson” (ITYSL) is probably the stupidest thing I’ve ever watched.

Just take care to erase the correct drive and not a drive with data or an operating system that you want to keep. You can also this method to erase external portable hard drives securely. Because SSDs are faster than hard drives and they store file data differently, a secure erase takes only seconds to minutes to complete. Securely erasing a standard hard drive can take several hours or even days to complete, depending on the size of your drives, so don't do this the night before donating or selling your device. If you're on Windows 8, though, you can do a factory reset with Windows reinstalled, with an option to do a secure erase in the process. Parted Magic can be downloaded with options starting at $9.ĭBAN and Parted Magic are good choices as long as you don't want to repurpose the PC with the OS intact. As with DBAN, you'll need to make a bootable CD or flash drive, then boot to it and follow the instructions. Check with the SSD manufacturer to see if they offer a free utility you can use. SSD's are more complicated to erase than standard hard drives. If you have an SSD you'll have to try another program. Note that DBAN works only on standard hard drives. Follow the prompts asking if you really want to erase the drive, and sit back while it runs. From here, slide the slider to Most Secure. Select your hard drive, then select Security Options. After that, some of your data may still be retrievable, but it would take a significant amount of time and expertise to do so. Unless you're worried about corporate espionage or government intervention, three passes is generally sufficient. To make sure your personal data isn't recoverable by reasonable means, do a secure wipe: This not only deletes your data but also overwrites the data a certain number of times, which makes the data much more difficult to retrieve. But if screwdrivers intimidate you or you want the computer to remain functional so someone else can use it, you'll have to invest a lot more time. However, we could not allow it to remain over an unrelated retail store with no homage or relevance to Tower Records.” In a statement to Billboard via email, Tower Records president Danny Ziejdel says, “Like all Tower Records fans, I was saddened to see the Tower Records signage on Sunset Boulevard removed despite our best efforts to keep it in place above some form of Tower Records offering. A few months later, when the sign was still on the building, Tower Records’ lawyer requested its removal and then Supreme finally painted it over. However, Supreme said it was painted onto the building and couldn’t be removed, and agreed to paint it over. When Supreme wouldn’t agree to have a Tower Records presence inside the store, Tower asked for the sign, offering to pay to have it sent to Brooklyn. To avoid confusion between the brands, a Tower Records spokesperson tells Billboard via email that Tower granted Supreme permission to use the existing Tower Records sign, royalty-free, provided there was a “corner of the store selling a curated selection of Tower music and/or branded merchandise a Tower listening bar and/or joint Supreme-Tower record launches and events.” Now, the famed music chain has plans to revive its physical presence, starting with the opening of a physical location this summer in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, followed by a series of pop-up shops involving collaborations with artists, brands and labels.Ģ017: What Does Supreme's Billion-Dollar Valuation Mean for Music's Hypebeasts? With the rise of vinyl sales in the past couple of years, however, Tower Records, now-owned by Dutch businessman Roald Smeets (who purchased the brand and IP out of the bankruptcy proceedings), bounced back in 2020 as an online store. “I love the name Tower Records on the building, and I was involved in trying to keep the name up and Supreme wanted to keep the name up,” says Luchs. Seeking to pay homage to the location’s legacy, Supreme, named for John Coltrane album A Love Supreme, wanted to keep the Tower Records sign on the building, says real estate broker and Newmark Knight Frank vice-chair Jay Luchs, who brokered the deal (and brokered both the Gibson lease and the sale from Barket to the current owners). The building remained without a tenant for two years until December 2020, when Supreme signed a 10-year lease with an additional five-year option. By that time, Barket and his partners had sold the property for $35 million to new owners who registered the property under the name Tower Records Square, LLC. In 2018, Gibson declared bankruptcy and the lease was voided. The beloved Tower Records sign was painted back onto the building in 2015 for the premiere of Colin Hanks‘ celebrated documentary All Things Must Pass: The Rise and Fall of Tower Records. Toward the end of 2014, iconic guitar brand Gibson leased the building for 15 years and painted it beige. Throughout the years, preservationists have lobbied unsuccessfully to have the building declared a local cultural landmark, but those ultimately failed with a unanimous West Hollywood Preservation Commission vote in November 2013 not to grant historic status.Ģ018: Tower Records Founder Russ Solomon Dies at 92 From 2008–2013, Live! On Sunset followed, painting it white with silver signage, and then in 2014 short-term tenant Flipagram painted the building orange. In 2007, Warner Brothers Records leased it to promote the White Stripes’ Icky Thump album, painting it the band’s trademark red and white. While those plans, which were scaled back but ultimately rejected twice by the West Hollywood City Council, were being developed, the building was leased to various companies for pop-up events. “I took pictures and went back to my office and called Gensler and said, ‘Make it look like this.’ We wanted to develop something special. “I was walking down the street and I had a direct view of this bandstand which was so whimsical,” he says. Over the phone from his Chicago office, Barket says his vision for the property was inspired by the Frank Gehry-designed bandstand in Chicago’s Millennium Park. A year later, Chicago-based developer Sol Barket bought the property, along with two business partners, under the name Centrum Properties for $12 million (investment firm Angelo Gordon joined the partnership in 2010), with plans to demolish the building and erect a five-story retail complex with two video billboards and a supergraphic. In 2006, when the famed music chain filed for bankruptcy for a second time (the first was in 2004) and shuttered all of its approximately 200 locations, the iconic Tower Records sign was painted over. This isn’t the first time the historic building’s appearance has changed, though. A view of the former Tower Records building in West Hollywood, under construction for a new Supreme location. Of course, the cost of living in China is significantly lower than in the West, so that $1,200 goes a lot further. There’s a surprising amount of variance in salary for foreign workers in China.Īt the low end, for those trying to build a career in China from the ground up, you might make as little as $1,200 a month. What’s the pay like for a Chinese speaker? In fact, it’s less than 75% of the Chinese demand according to some numbers. Lunch menus? Not so much.Īnd, unlike Chinese, the demand for Japanese translators isn’t quite as high. On average you can get 9-12 cents per word, although, again, specialization can help pump that price up. You could rely on interpreters and whatnot, but I imagine a good grounding in the language would give you a serious leg up.Īs a translator you could also make good money, turning Japanese into English. Would you, strictly speaking, need Japanese to do that? Marketing and sales geniuses could even get close to five grand!Īnd if you’re an IT consultant of considerable skill, you could push even further, close to six grand a month.įinally, of course, if you start your own business you could end up striking it rich. Plus, one nice thing about Japan is that, in theory, no avenue is closed to you if your language skills are good enough.ĭepending on your specialization, your salary could rise even higher. Lucky you, however, if you go the somewhat more lucrative route, you’ll be earning roughly on par with your Japanese colleagues at around three grand a month. If you’re living in Japan and working a blue collar job you can expect to make just over $24,000 a year, nearly a quarter the earnings of a native Japanese person in a similar role. Another big factor is your location.įor example, if you’re in Chicago, in an in demand specialization for Japanese, you could be pulling in nearly six figures. Since you’re reading this, I’ll assume you’re at least fairly fluent in English. Next, it’s what other languages can you pair with Japanese. First, and perhaps most obviously, is what kind of job you have. Several factors are going to affect this. What’s the pay like for a Japanese speaker? Also, the growth of Chinese is almost guaranteed in the future, while Japan’s economy has been relatively stagnant for many years. Chinese pays slightly less, but there’s more opportunity. Japanese pays slightly more, but there are fewer job opportunities. I’ll be covering a handful of different things, but we’ll focus on the earning aspect first.įrom a purely financial perspective, learn Chinese, specifically Mandarin. There’s a lot of different factors that would influence your decision. The final chapter deals with the interpretation of Buddhist chant as a source of historical information on the Japanese tones.A surprisingly common question is, “Should I learn Chinese or Japanese?” This is, equally, a surprisingly difficult question to answer. Part II shows how – contrary to what has often been thought – Ramsey’s theory is not in contradiction with the philological data. The final chapter deals with evidence from Japanese loanwords in Ainu. de Boer’s study shows how data from a host of Japanese dialects, from the north-eastern tip of Japan to the Ryukyu archipelago in the south-west, offer additional proof for Ramsey’s theory. Even though this theory offered a convincing explanation for many problems that remained unsolved in the prevalent theory, it failed to find acceptance. Ramsey proposed an alternative theory, which regards the peripheral Tokyo type dialects as archaic. The prevalent theory (Kindaichi 1951), which regards the Kyoto type tone system of central Japan as most archaic fails to explain the modern dialect data. The reconstruction of the historical development of the modern Japanese tone systems is one of the major issues in Japanese historical linguistics.
